Afrika Afeni Mills

Afrika Afeni Mills, MEd, is an educator, author, and education consultant who serves as CEO of Continental Drift, LLC and works nationally with teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators to develop culturally responsive, antibias, antiracist, pro-human instructional practices. An educator since 1999, she has been a classroom teacher in fourth and fifth grades, instructional coach, teacher developer, school administrator, and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at BetterLesson, as well as Curriculum and Instruction Director at Discovering Justice. She is an adjunct instructor at Boston College’s Lynch School of Education and Human Development and at Mount Holyoke College. Mills holds an M.Ed. in Elementary Teaching from Boston College’s Lynch School of Education and Human Development, where she graduated first in her class.

Mills is the author of Open Windows, Open Minds: Developing Antiracist, Pro-Human Students, published by Corwin in 2022, and of the widely shared blog post “A Letter to White Teachers of My Black Children.” Her TED-Ed talk, “Four Ways to Have Healthy Conversations About Race,” released in 2023, has garnered over one million views, and she was recognized as one of Brightbeam’s Top 22 Education Influencers of 2022 and inducted into Who’s Who in Black Charlotte in 2023.
