Debbie Diller

Debbie Diller is a nationally acclaimed educator, author, and consultant with more than four decades of classroom experience and professional development work — and in many ways, her story began long before she ever set foot in a real classroom. Growing up in Lititz, Pennsylvania, in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, she was the kind of child who set up a pretend school in her basement and played teacher for anyone who would sit still long enough to be her student. That early instinct never left her. She earned her B.S. from Millersville University and her M.Ed. from Temple University, then spent about forty years living and teaching in Texas — working across PreK through 10th grade as a classroom teacher, Title I reading specialist, migrant education teacher, and literacy coach — before eventually finding her way back to Pennsylvania, where she now lives in Bethlehem.

Since stepping into national consulting in 2000, Debbie has collaborated with schools across North America, modeling instruction, coaching teams, and helping teachers create learning environments where students thrive. Her work is animated by a simple but powerful habit: she listens first. When she walks into a school, she finds out what teachers already know and starts from there, meeting them where they are rather than arriving with a script. That same spirit of practical humility runs through every book she has written — Literacy Work Stations, Practice with Purpose, Making the Most of Small Groups, Spaces & Places, Math Work Stations, Simply Small Groups, the Simply Stations series, and Growing Independent Learners. Many of these titles were born from questions she kept hearing teachers ask, including the one that sparked the Simply Stations series: "How do I provide meaningful practice for the rest of the class when I'm meeting with a small group?"

Away from the work, Debbie is someone who fills her life with things that restore her. She loves being outside — walking, hiking, biking — and has a painter's eye for color and texture; she takes painting e-courses and keeps creative projects close at hand. She is also, at heart, a family person. She has two adult children, Jon and Jessica, and two grandchildren, Chloe and Colton, who bring her the kind of joy that no professional milestone can quite match. Even now, after decades of national consulting, she still gets the classic back-to-school dream in early fall — that small, very human detail that says everything about how deeply teaching lives in her.
