    Gretchen Bernabei

    Author

    Gretchen Bernabei

Gretchen Bernabei is a nationally respected educator, author, and writing expert with more than three decades of experience teaching writing in middle and high school classrooms — and anyone who has spent five minutes with her in a workshop knows that three decades has done nothing to cool her enthusiasm. She has a gift for making writing feel like something that belongs to the person doing it, not something imposed from the outside, and that spirit shows up in everything from her book titles to the way she runs a room. You don't accidentally name a book Why We Must Run with Scissors — that's someone who has thought carefully about what it means to set students free.

A Texas woman through and through, Gretchen earned her degree from Southwest Texas State University and went on to spend the better part of her career teaching middle and high school English in San Antonio, where she still lives with her husband and their two children. Much of her professional identity was shaped by her deep involvement with National Writing Project sites, where she learned to think about writing the way writers do — as a practice, a community, a conversation — rather than a set of rules to be memorized and tested. That philosophy became the backbone of her books: Reviving the Essay, The Good Writer's Kit, Lightning in a Bottle, Text Structures from the Masters, and the widely-used Text Structures series that teachers across the country rely on. The NCTE James Moffett Award, one of the field's most distinguished honors, recognized the kind of quiet, sustained impact that doesn't come from a single big idea but from decades of real classroom work.

Gretchen has stepped back from the national conference and professional development circuit more than once over the years — and each time, the pull back in has proven stronger than the pull away. Teachers keep finding her, retreats keep filling, and the invitations keep coming, because what she offers isn't a program or a framework so much as a permission slip: to trust students, to loosen the grip on formula, and to let writing be alive in the room. Beyond San Antonio, she leads writing retreats in Edna, Texas — intimate gatherings for students and educators that have become a destination for teachers who want to reconnect with why writing matters. TCTELA's Edmund J. Farrell Distinguished Service Award recognized what her workshop attendees already know: that Gretchen creates a room, not just a session.
