Jeff Anderson has never really forgotten what it felt like to be the kid who struggled in school. Growing up in Colorado, reading was hard for him, special education was part of his story, and bullying was a too-regular companion. Those memories didn't fade with time; they ripened into empathy. When you talk with Jeff about teaching, you can feel that everything he does is rooted in a promise he made to himself long ago: to become the kind of teacher he wished he'd had. There's a gentleness in the way he talks about struggling students, a refusal to define them by test scores or labels. He sees the child first—their humor, their curiosity, their hurt—and then builds the instruction around that human being.

Teaching wasn't the obvious path at the beginning. Jeff first studied accounting, following a more traditional, "sensible" trajectory, and his parents were initially horrified when he announced he wanted to become a teacher instead. But once he stepped into a classroom, it was clear he'd found the life he was meant for. Over the past 25+ years, he has poured himself into working with K–12 teachers and students, shaping approaches to writing and grammar that feel less like correction and more like invitation. Jeff loves to describe himself as "not a grammarian," and that's precisely what makes his approach so effective: grammar, in his hands, isn't a set of traps waiting to catch kids doing something wrong. It's a toolbox for joyful meaning-making, a way to help students notice patterns, play with language, and feel powerful as writers rather than punished as mistakes.

That spirit has carried Jeff far beyond his own classroom. These days he lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with his wife Stephanie and their four children—Austin, Cade, Gunnar, and Autumn—and from that vibrant, busy home base he now travels across the U.S. and internationally, presenting at conferences like NCTE and ASCD. His sessions feel less like lectures and more like conversations with a coach who's been in the trenches and still genuinely loves kids. The books he's written have become companions to countless teachers: Mechanically Inclined, Everyday Editing, 10 Things Every Writer Needs to Know, Revision Decisions, the Patterns of Power series for grades 1–5, 6–8, and 9–12, Patterns of Revision, Patterns of Wonder, and the Zack Delacruz middle-grade novels. Each title carries his hallmark blend of practicality and heart—strategies that work wrapped in deep respect for both students and the teachers who guide them.

Outside the classroom and the conference hall, Jeff is just as steady and intentional. He has coached track and cross country for nearly fifteen years, showing up day after day to cheer on runners as they push past limits they didn't know they could break. That same patient, consistent encouragement shows up at home and in his faith. His personal faith is central to his life; he sees his mission as walking with God and leading his family in genuine, lived-out belief rather than something merely talked about. When he writes the Zack Delacruz novels, you can sense how closely they echo his own story and his empathy for kids who feel unseen—the very kids he once was. In all these spaces—family, faith, coaching, teaching, writing—Jeff keeps returning to the same quiet conviction: every child deserves to be seen, to be believed in, and to discover that their voice matters.
