Allison Epstein is an American historical fiction author and professional editor based in Chicago. A Michigan native, she earned an MFA in fiction from Northwestern University and a BA in creative writing and Renaissance literature from the University of Michigan.
Epstein is the author of the historical novels A Tip for the Hangman (2021), Let the Dead Bury the Dead (2023), and Fagin the Thief: A Novel (2025), all published by Doubleday. Fagin the Thief, a reimagining of Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist from the perspective of Jacob Fagin, was a finalist for the 2026 Edgar Award for Best Novel and received the 2026 National Jewish Book Award for Fiction and the American Library Association’s Sophie Brody Medal.
