Allison Hintz

Allison Hintz is an associate professor of mathematics education in the School of Educational Studies at the University of Washington Bothell. Her work focuses on classroom discourse in mathematics, helping teachers design discussions that support students as sense-makers and participants in rich mathematical conversations.

She is co-author, with Elham Kazemi, of Intentional Talk: How to Structure and Lead Productive Mathematical Discussions, a widely used professional resource for K–5 teachers that offers frameworks and vignettes for planning and leading purposeful math talks; a second edition of the book is in development. Hintz also co-authored Mathematizing Children’s Literature: Sparking Connections, Joy, and Wonder Through Read-Alouds and Discussion with Antony T. Smith, extending her interest in integrating mathematics and literacy through interactive read-alouds. In addition, she and Smith have written on mathematizing read-alouds in professional journals, including an article in The Reading Teacher.
