Allison Skerrett

Allison Skerrett is a professor of curriculum and instruction in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at The University of Texas at Austin, where she also serves as Director of Teacher Education and works within the Language and Literacy Studies program and related cultural studies and urban teacher education initiatives. Her research and teaching focus on secondary English education in urban contexts, adolescent literacy practices inside and outside school, and transnational youths’ literacy practices across national, social, and educational settings, with an emphasis on educational justice for diverse students. She earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in English Language and Literature from the University of Massachusetts and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Boston College.

Skerrett is the author of Teaching Literacy in Troubled Times: Identity, Inquiry, and Social Action at the Heart of Instruction (co‑authored with Peter Smagorinsky) and Teaching Transnational Youth: Literacy and Education in a Changing World, an award‑winning volume that examines the educational opportunities and challenges facing students who live and attend school across different countries.
