Amy Lucenta

Amy Lucenta is a mathematics education consultant and cofounder of Fostering Math Practices, with extensive K–12 experience as a classroom teacher and instructional leader focused on helping all students—particularly those from historically marginalized groups and special populations—develop as mathematical thinkers. She began her career as a middle school mathematics teacher and later taught high school, before serving as an elementary math coach and working with preservice teachers. In her consulting work, she frequently supports educators in implementing the Standards for Mathematical Practice and in using equitable, high-leverage instructional routines that promote students’ mathematical reasoning and communication.

Lucenta is coauthor of Routines for Reasoning: Fostering the Mathematical Practices in All Students (with Grace Kelemanik and Susan Janssen Creighton) and coauthor of Teaching for Thinking: Fostering Mathematical Practices through Reasoning Routines. Through these works and related professional learning, she has helped design and popularize reasoning routines such as Capturing Quantities, Connecting Representations, Recognizing Repetition, and Three Reads, which aim to build students’ quantitative reasoning, structural thinking, and repeated reasoning in mathematics.
