Amy M. Wetherby

Amy M. Wetherby, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a speech-language pathologist and autism researcher whose work focuses on the early detection and intervention of autism spectrum disorder and communication disorders. She is a Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences and Director of the Autism Institute in the Florida State University College of Medicine, and also holds the Laurel Schendel Professorship of Communication Disorders at Florida State University. Wetherby graduated with a B.A. in Communication Disorders and Sciences from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1977 and earned her Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Sciences jointly from the University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of California, San Francisco in 1982.

Wetherby is a co-developer of the SCERTS Model, a comprehensive educational framework for children with autism spectrum disorders that emphasizes social communication, emotional regulation, and transactional support, and is coauthor of The SCERTS Model: A Comprehensive Educational Approach for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. She is also known for developing the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales (CSBS) and for leading work on the Early Social Interaction (ESI) model and autism-specific screening tools for infants and toddlers.
