Angela Valenzuela

Angela Valenzuela, Ph.D., is a professor in the Department of Curriculum & Instruction and the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy at the University of Texas at Austin, where she also serves as director of the Texas Center for Education Policy. A graduate of Stanford University, she completed her Ph.D. in Sociology there after earlier earning an M.A. in sociolinguistics from the University of Texas and a B.A. in English from Angelo State University. Her research focuses on the sociology of education, educational policy, minority youth in schools, and urban education reform.

Valenzuela is the author of the award‑winning Subtractive Schooling: U.S.–Mexican Youth and the Politics of Caring (1999), Leaving Children Behind: How “Texas‑style” Accountability Fails Latino Youth (2005), and Growing Critically Conscious Teachers: A Social Justice Curriculum for Educators of Latino/a Youth (2016). She is the executive director of the National Latina/o Education Research and Policy Project (NLERAPP), which develops community‑based, “grow your own” teacher education pipelines for Latino/a youth, and she founded and maintains the education blog Educational Equity, Politics, and Policy in Texas.
