Anna María Escobar

Anna María Escobar is a Professor Emerita of Spanish and Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she has specialized in Hispanic linguistics, language contact, and sociolinguistic variation. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Linguistics from the State University of New York at Buffalo, as well as earlier degrees in linguistics and language and literature from institutions in France and Peru.

Escobar is coauthor of Introducción a la lingüística hispánica, a widely used Spanish-language introduction to Spanish linguistics that covers phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, the history and dialects of Spanish, and its variation across Latin America, Spain, and the United States. Her research focuses on contact varieties of Spanish, particularly Spanish in contact with Quechua, Andean sociolinguistics, and processes of grammaticalization and language change, and she has published books, chapters, and articles on the emergence and development of Andean Spanish.
