Annamary Consalvo

Annamary L. Consalvo was an associate professor of literacy at the University of Texas at Tyler, where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in teacher education, literature, disciplinary literacy, children’s and young adult literature, and research methods. Before entering higher education, she taught middle and high school English, experience that informed her work on writing instruction and adolescent literacy. She earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction (Language and Literacy Studies) from the University of Texas at Austin in 2011, following an M.Ed. in Secondary English Education from Plymouth State University and a B.A. from Burlington College.

Consalvo co-edited When Teaching Writing Gets Tough: Challenges and Possibilities in Secondary Writing Instruction (Teachers College Press, 2024), which offers practical strategies for secondary teachers facing challenges in writing instruction. Her research focused on the teaching of writing, youth voice, disciplinary and adolescent literacy, multiliteracies, and ways young adult literature can open critical conversations in classrooms. She published work in journals including English Journal, Teaching and Teacher Education, Journal of Language and Literacy, The ALAN Review, Elementary School Journal, and others, and was long active in
