Antony T. Smith
Antony T. Smith is a professor of literacy education in the School of Educational Studies at the University of Washington Bothell, where he teaches courses in teacher education, research methods, and literacy assessment and instruction. His work focuses on disciplinary literacy in K–12 settings, with particular attention to how reading comprehension and vocabulary can be developed through interactive read-alouds, mathematics, and children’s literature.
He is the co-author of Mathematizing Children’s Literature: Sparking Connections, Joy, and Wonder Through Read-Alouds and Discussion (Stenhouse, 2022), written with Allison Hintz, as well as Why We Drop Out: Understanding and Disrupting Student Pathways to Leaving School and A Cyclical Model of Literacy Learning: Expanding the Gradual Release of Responsibility. Smith also co-authored the article “Mathematizing Read-Alouds in Three Easy Steps,” which outlines practical approaches for integrating mathematical thinking into classroom read-alouds.
