Anne Atwell Merkel

Anne Atwell Merkel is an educator and co-author of The Reading Zone, 2nd Edition: How to Help Kids Become Skilled, Passionate, Habitual, Critical Readers, written with her mother, Nancie Atwell. She has taught middle-school English since 2009 and teaches writing, reading, and history to grades 7–8 at the Center for Teaching and Learning, where she also coordinates the school’s intern program.

Merkel previously taught for four years in Maryland and Washington, D.C., before joining the Center for Teaching and Learning. She and Atwell draw on their classroom experience to present reading-workshop practices and examples for teachers of students in grades K–8.
