Audrey Wood

Audrey Wood is an American children’s book author best known for her highly acclaimed picture books created in collaboration with her husband, illustrator Don Wood. Born in 1948, she has written more than 40 picture books, including the bestselling classic The Napping House (1984), which has sold over 2 million copies worldwide and received multiple honors such as being named a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book and an American Library Association Notable Book for Children. Several of her works, notably King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub, have received Caldecott recognition for their illustration, highlighting the long‑standing creative partnership between Audrey and Don Wood.

Wood studied art and drama at the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock, Arkansas, and has worked in fields connected to books and the arts, including owning and operating a book and import store and teaching children’s drama and art. In addition to The Napping House, her other well‑known titles include King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub, Heckedy Peg, Piggies, and The Full Moon at the Napping House, many of which feature illustrations by Don Wood and have become staples of contemporary children’s literature.
