Barbara Gottschalk

Barbara Gottschalk is an English as a second language (ESL/ESOL) teacher and author who has taught English language learners from elementary school through graduate level in five U.S. states, as well as teaching English in Japan earlier in her career. She holds an M.A. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and an MBA, and has worked extensively with multilingual classrooms, sometimes serving students who speak many different home languages.

Gottschalk is the author of Dispelling Misconceptions About English Language Learners: Research-Based Ways to Improve Instruction, which addresses common myths about English learners and offers research-based guidance for classroom practice. She has also written Get Money for Your Classroom, reflecting her experience writing and implementing successful education grants and serving as a grant reviewer for TESOL and the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of English Language Acquisition. In addition, she has contributed articles to Educational Leadership and Kappan Online on misconceptions about English learners and how to better support them in schools.
