Barry Gilmore

Barry Gilmore, Ed.D., was an English and social studies teacher for more than 15 years before becoming a middle school principal and later a head of upper school in Memphis, Tennessee. A National Board Certified teacher and past president of the Tennessee Council of Teachers of English, he received multiple honors for his work in the classroom, including the National Council of Teachers of English Outstanding High School Educator Award, the U.S. Department of Education’s American Star of Teaching Award, and the Tennessee Holocaust Commission’s Educator of the Year.

Gilmore authored numerous professional books and articles on literacy and instruction, focusing on critical reading, writing, and classroom discussion. His works include Academic Moves for College and Career Readiness, Grades 6–12: 15 Must-Have Skills Every Student Needs to Achieve (coauthored with Jim Burke), which outlines key academic processes to prepare secondary students for college and careers. He continued to write and lead in the field of literacy instruction until his death in 2019 at the age of 50.
