bell hooks, born Gloria Jean Watkins on September 25, 1952, in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, was an American writer, educator, feminist theorist, and social critic. She was a Distinguished Professor in Residence at Berea College in Kentucky and wrote extensively on race, class, gender, education, and culture.
Her 1994 book "Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom" presents her vision of teaching as a liberatory practice and reflects her role as a writer and teacher. Among her many other books are "Ain’t I a Woman?", "Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center", "All About Love", "Teaching Community", "We Real Cool", and "Outlaw Culture".
