Beth Skelton

Beth Skelton is an educator and consultant specializing in support for multilingual learners, particularly students who have moved beyond newcomer status but still need targeted scaffolding to access rigorous academic content. She is the co-author of Long-Term Success for Experienced Multilinguals (Corwin, 2023), a research-based instructional framework that helps secondary teachers design content-area lessons so experienced multilinguals can develop advanced academic language and demonstrate discipline-specific learning. She later co-authored Integrated Literacy for Experienced Multilinguals, Grades 4–12, which extends this work by providing an integrated literacy framework that connects the four language domains with key dimensions of academic language for upper elementary and secondary students.

Skelton’s focus on experienced multilinguals is rooted in her own background studying content in a non-heritage language as a university exchange student in Germany, an experience that informs her asset-based approach to multilingual learners. In addition to her books, she contributes to professional learning through workshops, podcasts, and articles that guide teachers in designing backward-planned units, implementing scaffolds, and reframing “long-term English learners” as experienced multilinguals to highlight students’ strengths.
