Betsy Fulwiler

Betsy Rupp Fulwiler is an elementary science education specialist and author best known for developing the Expository Writing and Science Notebooks Program used in Seattle Public Schools’ pre‑K–5 inquiry-based science curriculum, a National Science Foundation–funded Local Systemic Change initiative. A former editor and public school teacher, she later served as a science coach in Seattle schools, where she created and refined a “science-writing approach” that integrates expository writing with hands-on science to build students’ conceptual understanding and critical thinking.

She is the author of Writing in Science: How to Scaffold Instruction to Support Learning (Heinemann, 2007) and Writing in Science in Action: Strategies, Tools, and Classroom Video (Heinemann, 2011), which together present her classroom-tested strategies, tools, and video-based models for teaching science writing in elementary classrooms. Her work and materials have been widely cited in K–12 science education resources and professional development literature focused on science notebooks, evidence-based writing, and productive classroom discussion.
