Bill Honig

Bill Honig is an educator, policy leader, and coauthor of Teaching Reading Sourcebook, a widely used guide to evidence-based reading instruction. He is a founder and former president of CORE (Consortium on Reaching Excellence in Education), which provides professional development in reading and mathematics, and has been a classroom teacher, local school district superintendent, and member of the California State Board of Education. Honig was elected California State Superintendent of Public Instruction, a role he held for about ten years beginning in 1983, overseeing the state’s public school system.

Originally trained as an attorney, Honig has worked in education for more than four decades and has been involved in curriculum and instructional quality at the state level, including service as chair and vice-chair of the California Instructional Quality Commission. In addition to Teaching Reading Sourcebook, he is the author of Teaching Our Children to Read: The Role of Skills in a Comprehensive Reading Program, and he continues to write about schooling and literacy on his Building Better Schools website.
