Brian H. Smith, PhD, is a researcher and educator focused on social-emotional learning and student well-being. He has worked as a senior research scientist at the Committee for Children and later as director of research at CharacterStrong, where he helped develop and revise K–12 SEL curricula. He earned both his master’s degree and doctorate from the University of Washington’s School of Social Work, and his earlier school-based experience included roles as an elementary counselor, mental health specialist, school social worker, early intervention and prevention specialist, and substance abuse counselor.
Smith has published book chapters and articles for both research and educator audiences, and he coauthored The Recipe for Student Well-Being: Five Key Ingredients for Social, Behavioral, and Academic Success with Clayton R. Cook and Aria E. Fiat.
