Caren Holtzman

Caren Holtzman is a math educator and lecturer in the Department of Education Studies at the University of California San Diego, where she directs the Partners at Learning (PAL) program and works with P–12 students as well as pre-service and in-service teachers on issues of equitable education, particularly in mathematics and the arts. She has received multiple awards and grants for her teaching, including the University of California, San Diego Paul Saltman Teaching Excellence Award.

Holtzman is co-author, with Lynn Susholtz, of Object Lessons: Teaching Math through the Visual Arts, K–5, a resource that uses everyday objects and visual art to create rigorous, hands-on mathematics activities aligned with key standards. In addition to this work, she has co-authored teacher resource books such as Minilessons for Math Practice, Grades K–2 and Minilessons for Math Practice, Grades 3–5, which provide short, engaging activities to reinforce math skills in problem-solving contexts. She is also the author of children’s books including A Quarter from the Tooth Fairy, part of the Hello Math Reader series that integrates simple math concepts into an easy-to-read story with accompanying family activities.
