Carla España

Carla España is a teacher, literacy consultant, researcher, and author whose work centers the experiences of bilingual Latinx students and multilingual learners. She holds a BS in communication studies from New York University, an M.Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary, an MA in childhood education with a bilingual extension from Hunter College (CUNY), and a Ph.D. in urban education from the CUNY Graduate Center. She has taught in bilingual classrooms in Harlem, worked with Teachers College Reading and Writing Project partner schools, and has taught in bilingual teacher preparation programs. She is an Assistant Professor of Bilingual Education, Puerto Rican/Latinx, and Latin American Studies at Brooklyn College, City University of New York.

España is the co-author of En Comunidad: Lessons for Centering the Voices and Experiences of Bilingual Latinx Students (Heinemann, 2020), written with Luz Yadira Herrera, which focuses on critical bilingual literacies and centering students’ linguistic and cultural knowledge. With Herrera, she also co-authored Libros solidarios: Teaching Language and Building Community With Latine Children’s Literature in Spanish, K–6, a Spanish-language professional book that offers classroom-ready unit plans using Spanish-language children’s literature to foster biliteracy, bilingual learning, and community. She has also authored work on narrative writing with Latinx teens, including **Narrative Writing with Latinx Teens: Test
