Carol Ann Tomlinson

Carol Ann Tomlinson is the William Clay Parrish, Jr. Professor Emerita at the University of Virginia’s School of Education and Human Development. She earned her Ed.D., M.Ed., and B.A. from the University of Virginia and was Virginia’s Teacher of the Year in 1974. Before joining UVA, she taught in public schools for 21 years, working with students in preschool, middle school, and high school, and later served as chair of the Educational Leadership, Foundations, and Policy Department and co-director of the University’s Institutes on Academic Diversity.

Tomlinson is widely recognized for her scholarship on differentiated instruction and has authored or co-authored more than 300 books, book chapters, articles, and other educational materials for K–12 educators. Her books include The Differentiated Classroom: Responding to the Needs of All Learners, How to Differentiate Instruction in Academically Diverse Classrooms, Leading and Managing a Differentiated Classroom, and Leading for Differentiation: Growing Teachers Who Grow Kids.
