Carol Jago

Carol Jago is a longtime English teacher and literacy educator who taught middle and high school English in Santa Monica, California, for about 32 years. She serves as associate director of the California Reading and Literature Project at UCLA and is a past president of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), roles in which she has helped shape national conversations about reading and literature instruction. She has also edited California English, the journal of the California Association of Teachers of English.

Jago is the author of numerous professional books for teachers, including The Book in Question: Why and How Reading Is in Crisis, published by Heinemann, as well as titles such as With Rigor for All: Meeting Standards for Reading Literature, Papers, Papers, Papers, Classics in the Classroom, and Cohesive Writing: Why Concept Is Not Enough. Her contributions to literacy education have been recognized with honors including the International Literacy Association’s Adolescent Literacy Thought Leader Award, the CEL Exemplary Leadership Award, and a lifetime or career achievement award from the California Association of Teachers of English.
