Carolyn Helmers

Carolyn Helmers is a classroom teacher in the Forest Hills School District in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she teaches at Maddux Elementary School (K–6). In collaboration with Susan Vincent, she co‑authored Intentional From the Start: Guiding Emergent Readers in Small Groups, a professional resource that focuses on guided reading and literacy instruction for emergent readers at text levels Pre‑A through D.

In Intentional From the Start, Helmers draws on her classroom experience to examine the specific demands early‑level texts place on young readers and offers small‑group coaching strategies, instructional procedures in reading, writing, and word study, and guidance for designing literacy centers that reinforce learning at the small‑group table.
