Carrie Holmberg

Carrie Holmberg, Ed.D., is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Teacher Education and a preservice teacher educator at San José State University, where she also serves in a leadership role with the Center for Innovation in Applied Education Policy, focusing on assessment for learning, feedback, and ambitious teaching practice in schools that serve at‑promise students. A former Title I high school teacher in Silicon Valley with extensive experience mentoring new teachers, she has twice earned National Board Certification. Her scholarship centers on formative assessment, feedback practices, and teacher learning, including work on teacher learning progressions in multilingual, high‑needs middle school mathematics settings.

Holmberg is coauthor of Mastering Formative Assessment Moves: 7 High-Leverage Practices to Advance Student Learning (ASCD, 2017) and Feedback for Continuous Improvement in the Classroom: New Perspectives, Practices, and Possibilities (Corwin, 2023). She is also coauthor of AI and Deeper Learning: Promises, Paradoxes, and Evolving Practices (Harvard Education Press, 2026). Her work has appeared in venues such as The Handbook of Research of Middle Level Education, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School, The English Journal, and Phi Delta Kappan.
