Catherine E. Travis

Catherine E. Travis is a linguist whose work focuses on Spanish and language variation. She is a co‑author of Introducción a la lingüística hispánica, contributing to both the second and third editions of this widely used Spanish‑language introduction to Hispanic linguistics. In the second edition she authored the chapter on semantics and pragmatics, and she continues as one of the principal authors in the updated third edition.

Travis has held academic positions in Spanish and linguistics, including roles as Associate Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Department of Linguistics at the University of New Mexico, and later as a professor in the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics at the Australian National University. Her research examines language variation and change, bilingualism, and codeswitching, and she is the author of Discourse Markers in Colombian Spanish: A Study in Polysemy (Mouton de Gruyter, 2005) as well as co‑author of Bilingualism in the Community: Code‑Switching and Grammars in Contact (Cambridge University Press, 2018).
