Cathy Humphreys
Cathy Humphreys is a mathematics educator and author known for her work on Number Talks and on helping students develop deep conceptual understanding of mathematics. She has taught mathematics in California public schools across grades 2–12 for about thirty years and has focused particularly on middle school mathematics. Humphreys has served as a Noyce mathematics coach in California’s Silicon Valley, worked as an instructor for the Mathematics Education Collaborative and Math Solutions, and taught preservice mathematics teachers as a lecturer at Stanford University.
Humphreys is the coauthor, with Ruth Parker, of Making Number Talks Matter: Developing Mathematical Practices and Deepening Understanding, Grades 3–10 and Digging Deeper: Making Number Talks Matter Even More, Grades 3–10, which extend the Number Talks routine to upper elementary and secondary classrooms and emphasize students’ mathematical reasoning and sense making. She is also the coauthor, with Jo Boaler, of Connecting Mathematical Ideas: Middle School Video Cases to Support Teaching and Learning.
