Cathy Vatterott

Cathy Vatterott is Professor Emeritus of Education at the University of Missouri–St. Louis and a former middle school and high school teacher and middle school principal. She is widely regarded as an international expert on K–12 homework, having researched, written, and spoken about homework for more than 20 years, and frequently presents at national and international education conferences as a consultant and workshop leader.

Vatterott is the author of multiple influential books for educators, including Rethinking Homework: Best Practices That Support Diverse Needs (2nd edition, 2018) and The Teens Are Not Alright: School and Classroom Practices to Support Student Well-Being (2025), as well as Rethinking Grading: Meaningful Assessment for Standards-Based Learning (2015). Her work on homework, grading, and student well-being has been featured in major media outlets, and she serves on the advisory board for Parents magazine.
