Chartered College of Teaching

The Chartered College of Teaching is the professional body for teachers in the United Kingdom, established to promote sound learning and to improve and recognise the art, science and practice of teaching for the public benefit. Originating as the College of Preceptors in the 19th century, it now supports teachers and school leaders through membership, accreditation, professional learning and the award of Chartered Teacher Status, with a mission to develop effective, evidence‑informed teachers and leaders, improve professional learning, establish robust career pathways and enhance job satisfaction in the profession.

As part of its research and policy work, the Chartered College of Teaching has authored Teacher Recruitment, Retention and Career Progression: A Guide for School Leaders, a practical guide designed to help school leaders recruit, support and retain teachers while building diverse and inclusive staff teams and addressing barriers faced by individuals with protected characteristics in entering and progressing within the profession.
