Cheryl Urow

Cheryl Urow, M.Ed., is an education specialist and co-founder of the Center for Teaching for Biliteracy, where she provides professional development for teachers, schools, and districts supporting the education of English language learners and bilingual students. A sequential bilingual who learned Spanish as a Peace Corps volunteer in Costa Rica, she began her career teaching in rural Costa Rica and later worked as an inner-city dual language teacher in the United States.

Urow is co-author, with Karen Beeman, of Teaching for Biliteracy: Strengthening Bridges Between Languages, a professional development guide that introduces the instructional concept of “the Bridge” to support cross-language transfer and biliteracy development in bilingual, dual language, and immersion classrooms. Her professional focus includes biliteracy development, strategic use of languages in bilingual and dual language programs, authentic Spanish literacy instruction, and designing instruction that purposefully connects students’ two languages.
