China Harvey is a high school social studies teacher and co-author of Teaching Beyond the Timeline: Engaging Students in Thematic History (Heinemann, 2024), written with Lisa Herzig. Their book is a practical guide for middle and high school teachers interested in transforming traditional, chronological U.S. history courses into thematic, inquiry-based curricula that center identity, inclusion, and connections to current events.
Harvey has experience as an instructional coach and teacher on special assignment, roles in which they have developed curriculum, led professional development, and helped write the course of study for their district’s U.S. History course. Their work, including articles and adapted excerpts on thematic history and making history relevant for students, focuses on designing units around themes such as women’s and LGBTQIA+ rights, African American freedom movements, immigration, and economic justice.
