Chris Sperry
Chris Sperry is a coauthor, with Cyndy Scheibe, of Teaching Students to Decode the World: Media Literacy and Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum, a 2022 guide to constructivist media decoding and media literacy instruction across subject areas. He is the cofounder and Director of Curriculum and Staff Development for Project Look Sharp, a media literacy initiative based at Ithaca College that develops curriculum materials and professional development for educators.
Sperry has taught middle and high school social studies, English, and media studies at the Lehman Alternative Community School in Ithaca, New York, since 1979, where he has also served as an instructional coach and mentor teacher. He has authored and coauthored numerous articles, lessons, and curriculum kits on integrating media literacy and critical thinking into K–12 curricula, including units on presidential campaigns, the Middle East, Soviet history, Martin Luther King Jr., Africa, global warming, and environmental issues. Sperry holds a B.A. from Ithaca College, where he designed a planned studies major in media literacy, and an M.Ed. in human development from Harvard University.
