Christopher Emdin

Christopher Emdin is an educator, scholar, and author whose work focuses on urban education, science teaching, and culturally responsive pedagogy. He is the Maxine Greene Chair for Distinguished Contributions to Education and Professor of Science Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he also directs the STEAM, DREAM & IdeaLab and has been recognized as a leading voice in integrating hip-hop and popular culture into classroom practice. He holds a B.S. in Physical Anthropology/Biology/Chemistry from Lehman College, an M.S. in Natural Sciences from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a Ph.D. in Urban Education from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

Emdin is the author of the New York Times bestseller For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood … and the Rest of Y’all Too: Reality Pedagogy and Urban Education and Ratchetdemic: Reimagining Academic Success, as well as other works on urban science education and culture in schools. His scholarship and public work include creating the #HipHopEd social media movement and the Science Genius B.A.T.T.L.E.S. program, which use hip-hop to engage students in STEM learning.
