Claudia Bertolone-Smith

Claudia Bertolone-Smith, PhD, is an associate professor in the School of Education at California State University, Chico, where she coordinates the Multiple Subject Program and teaches mathematics pedagogy and methods courses to credential candidates. She has more than two decades of classroom experience teaching grades 1–7 in a range of settings, including rural, urban, alternative, and public schools, and her work focuses on student self-assessment and regulation, mathematical discourse, and the development of positive math identities.

She is co-creator and co-author of Tools Not Rules®: Developing Self-Regulation for Improved Student Behavior in Grades K–8, a classroom behavior approach and book developed with educator Marlene Moyer to help students honestly assess and effectively regulate their behavior through compassionate, shame-free strategies. Bertolone-Smith’s research and professional interests include removing barriers to learning mathematics, pre-service teachers’ math identities, fraction understanding, and programs that support self-assessment and regulation among middle school youth.
