Connie Juel

Connie Juel, PhD, is Professor Emerita of Education at Stanford University and a leading researcher in literacy acquisition. Her work focuses on how classroom instruction influences the development of children with different reading and linguistic profiles, and she is particularly known for her longitudinal research on models of reading development and interventions for struggling readers. A former elementary school teacher, she has taught at the primary level and has worked extensively in elementary schools with preservice teachers and students interested in learning to read.

Juel is a coauthor of Book Buddies: A Tutoring Framework for Struggling Readers, a widely used resource for one-on-one reading intervention in the early grades. Her other publications include works such as Teaching Reading in the 21st Century and Learning to Read and Write in One Elementary School, and she has published numerous articles on literacy acquisition. She has served as associate editor of Reading Research Quarterly, received the Oscar S. Causey Award for outstanding contributions to reading research, and has been inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame.
