Darlene Tangel

Darlene M. Tangel, Ph.D., is a reading specialist and researcher who has focused on phonological awareness and early literacy instruction. She is coauthor of Road to the Code: A Phonological Awareness Program for Young Children, an 11‑week, small‑group intervention designed to build phoneme segmentation, blending, and letter–sound correspondence skills in kindergarten and first‑grade students, developed with Benita A. Blachman, Eileen Wynne Ball, and Rochella Black. She is also coauthor, with Benita A. Blachman, of Road to Reading: A Program for Preventing and Remediating Reading Difficulties, a structured decoding and fluency program for students in grades 1–3 who have basic phonemic awareness and letter–sound knowledge but need support in word identification, oral reading, and dictation.

Tangel completed doctoral work on the effects of phoneme awareness training on young children’s invented spelling, contributing to the research base that underlies these interventions.
