David A. Sousa

David A. Sousa, EdD, is an international consultant in educational neuroscience and the author of more than twenty books that translate findings from brain research into practical strategies for improving teaching and learning. He holds a bachelor of science in chemistry from Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts, a master of arts in teaching science from Harvard University, and a doctorate from Rutgers University. His teaching and leadership experience spans high school science teaching, service as a K–12 director of science, supervisor of instruction, and district superintendent in New Jersey schools, as well as appointments as an adjunct professor of education at Seton Hall University and Rutgers University. Sousa is a member of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society and has conducted workshops and presentations for more than 200,000 educators in hundreds of school districts and at national conventions across the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia.

Sousa is best known for his influential series of books on how the brain learns, including How the Brain Learns (now in multiple editions), How the Brain Learns to Read, How the Brain Learns Mathematics, and related titles such as How the Special Needs Brain Learns, How the Gifted Brain Learns, How the Brain Influences Behavior, and How the ELL Brain Learns.[
