David Bowles

David Bowles is a Mexican American author, poet, translator, and educator from South Texas, where he teaches in the Literatures and Cultural Studies department at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He earned his BA, MA, and PhD from the University of Texas–Pan American, and his work is deeply informed by the cultural traditions of the Río Grande Valley, the American South and Southwest, and Mexico. Bowles has been recognized with awards from the American Library Association, the Texas Institute of Letters, and the Texas Associated Press, and was inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2017.

Bowles is the author of more than forty books for children, teens, and adults, including award‑winning titles such as They Call Me Güero, My Two Border Towns, The Smoking Mirror, Feathered Serpent, Dark Heart of Sky: Myths of Mexico, Ancient Night, Secret of the Moon Conch, and The Prince & the Coyote. He wrote the 13th Street series, including 13th Street #1: Battle of the Bad-Breath Bats. His poetry and translations include Shattering and Bricolage and *Flower, Song, Dance:
