David D. Paige

David D. Paige is a Professor of Literacy and Director of the Jerry L. Johns Literacy Clinic at Northern Illinois University, where his work focuses on how children acquire proficient reading skills and on designing instructional systems that support literacy development. Previously, he served as an Associate Professor of Literacy and Chair of the Ph.D. in Education and Social Change program at Bellarmine University, co-founding Bellarmine’s first Ph.D. program and conducting research on early and adolescent reading, fluency, and prosody.

Paige has authored and co-authored numerous articles in top-tier journals on topics including phonemic awareness, word identification, vocabulary, comprehension, and reading fluency in elementary, middle, and secondary students. He is the author of Teaching the Decoding Triangle: A Developmental Approach to Early Literacy Instruction, and co-author of Artfully Teaching the Science of Reading and The Reading Steward’s Handbook. His applied work includes serving as principal investigator of the Bellarmine Literacy Project, a $3.2 million initiative that trained 800 K–3 reading teachers, and leading other efforts to align classroom reading instruction with current literacy research.
