David Nungaray

David Nungaray is an educator, author, and school leader with extensive experience in dual language and multilingual education. He is a coauthor of Breaking Down the Monolingual Wall: Essential Shifts for Multilingual Learners’ Success, a practitioner-oriented volume focused on culturally and linguistically sustaining practices in dual language classrooms and schools. A son of Mexican immigrants and a native Spanish speaker, Nungaray began his career as a dual language teacher and was recognized in his first year as his district’s Elementary Rising Star Teacher of the Year. He later served as principal of a flagship dual language school in San Antonio ISD, where he led work on dual language program design and implementation.

Nungaray has worked nationally as a bilingual consulting partner with the education nonprofit TNTP, leading partnerships across multiple states on strategic planning, (bi)literacy visioning, dual language supports, and high-quality instructional materials adoption. He has contributed to federal and national conversations on multilingual education, including co-hosting a U.S. Department of Education Office of English Language Acquisition podcast series on multilingual learners. Nungaray holds a bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in Spanish from Chapman University and a master’s degree in school leadership from Trinity University, where he has also taught as an adjunct professor in multilingual education, school leadership, and special education.
