Deborah Dean

Deborah Dean is a professor of English at Brigham Young University and a former junior high and high school English teacher, where she taught writing and English teaching courses and now works primarily with preservice and practicing teachers on writing instruction. Her work focuses on evidence-based practices for writing and grammar instruction in K–12 classrooms.

She is the author of What Works in Writing Instruction: Research and Practice (Second Edition), originally grounded in the Carnegie “Writing Next” report and updated to synthesize newer research on effective writing pedagogy. Dean has also authored Strategic Writing: The Writing Process and Beyond in the Secondary English Classroom, Genre Theory: Teaching, Writing, and Being, and the quick reference guide Teaching Grammar in the Secondary Classroom, and she is coauthor of Revision Decisions: Talking Through Sentences and Beyond with Jeff Anderson.
