Deborah Wiles is an American children’s author known for Freedom Summer (2001), her first picture book, which was inspired by her childhood in Mississippi during the Civil Rights era. According to her official biography, she also wrote the novels Love, Ruby Lavender, Each Little Bird That Sings and Revolution; her books include the Sixties Trilogy, which continues with Countdown and Anthem.
Wiles has said she wrote Freedom Summer to explore what happened the year she was eleven, when the Civil Rights Act was passed. The book was illustrated by Jerome Lagarrigue and published by Simon & Schuster/Atheneum, and it received the Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Award and other honors.
