Edward Fergus

Edward Fergus is a professor of urban education and policy at Rutgers University–Newark and a former associate professor of urban education and policy at Temple University’s College of Education. His work focuses on the intersection of educational policy and student outcomes, with particular attention to disproportionality in special education and school discipline, the academic and social engagement of Black and Latino boys, and school climate conditions. Prior to his university roles, he worked as a high school social studies teacher, program evaluator, and community school program director, including positions with the Children’s Aid Society.

Fergus is the author of Solving Disproportionality and Achieving Equity: A Leader’s Guide to Using Data to Change Hearts and Minds (Corwin/Corwin Press, 2016–2017) and has written or co-edited several other works, including Skin Color and Identity Formation: Perceptions of Opportunity and Academic Orientation among Mexican and Puerto Rican Youth (Routledge, 2004), Invisible No More: Disenfranchisement of Latino Men and Boys (co-editor, Routledge, 2011), and Schooling for Resilience: Improving the Life Trajectory of Black and Latino Boys (co-author, Harvard Education Press, 2014). He has published numerous articles and evaluation reports and serves as a consultant
