Elham Kazemi

Elham Kazemi is a professor of mathematics education and the Geda and Phil Condit Professor of Mathematics Education in the College of Education at the University of Washington. Her research focuses on how elementary teachers elicit and build children’s mathematical reasoning, how classroom discussions support students’ mathematical thinking, and how schools can be organized so that teachers learn in strong professional communities alongside their students. She holds a B.S. in psychology with an elementary teaching certificate from Duke University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in educational psychology/mathematics education from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Kazemi is coauthor of Choral Counting & Counting Collections: Transforming the PreK–5 Math Classroom and Intentional Talk: How to Structure and Lead Productive Mathematical Discussions, which support teachers in leading equitable, discussion-rich mathematics classrooms. Her scholarship and partnership work draw on research on children’s mathematical thinking, classroom practice, organizational learning, and equity in elementary mathematics education.
