Ellen Riojas Clark

Ellen Riojas Clark, Ph.D., is a professor emerita of Bicultural-Bilingual Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio and a nationally recognized scholar in bilingual and bicultural education. She earned her B.A. in Elementary Education from Trinity University, an M.A. in Bicultural-Bilingual Studies from UTSA, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Texas at Austin. Over a 42‑year career at UTSA, she coordinated multiple Title VII bilingual teacher-training and leadership projects and has been honored with The Ellen Riojas Clark, Ph.D. Endowed Chair in Bicultural-Bilingual Studies, noted as the only endowed chair named for a Latina scholar in the United States.

Clark’s scholarship focuses on Latino education, ethnic and cultural identity, self-concept, teacher identity, and Latino cultural studies, including the relationship between self-concept, ethnic identity, and self-efficacy in students and teachers. She is co‑editor of Multicultural Literature for Latino Bilingual Children: Their Words, Their Worlds, an influential collection on Latino children’s literature, and has authored or co‑authored other works such as Don Moisés Espino del Castillo y sus Calaveras and Revolutionary Women of Texas and Mexico: Portraits of Soldaderas, Saints, and Subversives.[5
