Emma Chiappetta

Emma Chiappetta is a mathematics instructor, instructional coach, and director of faculty development at Wasatch Academy, a boarding school in central Utah. She has taught mathematics at levels ranging from 6th grade through college, as well as engineering and robotics, and serves as a curriculum coordinator working with teachers on curricular alignment and authentic assessment. Emma has also worked as a mastery coach for Mastery Portfolio, supporting educators across disciplines in personalizing learning. In recognition of her classroom practice, she was named Utah K–12 Teacher of the Year in 2017.

Chiappetta is the author of Learning by Mistake: 12 Strategies to Turn Student Errors into Opportunities (ASCD, 2025), which draws on classroom experience and research to help educators build positive “mistake cultures” that leverage student errors for deeper learning. She has also written Creating Curious Classrooms: The Beauty of Questions and contributes articles on topics such as growth mindset, hybrid learning, and mistake-friendly classrooms for outlets including Educational Leadership and Edutopia. Emma holds a bachelor’s degree from Bowdoin College, a master’s in mathematics from Dartmouth College, and a master’s in education from Clemson University.
