Frank McCourt

Frank McCourt (1930–2009) was an Irish-American author and teacher. He taught in New York City public schools for nearly three decades, including at Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan. His memoir Angela’s Ashes (1996), about his impoverished childhood in Limerick, Ireland, won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award.

McCourt also wrote the memoirs ’Tis (2000) and Teacher Man (2005), the latter reflecting on his career as a New York City English teacher. He contributed the introduction to 1,001 Pearls of Teachers’ Wisdom: Quotations on Life and Learning, compiled by Erin Gruwell.
